Arts in August 2016

Tremont West partners each year with our Ward 3 Councilman, now Kerry McCormack, LAND Studio and Cleveland Public Theatre to present free professional dance, theatre and music in Lincoln Park with free admission to the public during the month of August.

Executive Artistic Director of Cleveland Public Theatre, Raymond Bobgan, is the curator of the performances. He has stuck with tradition for 2016 in the first 3 weekends of Arts in August. Opening night will be Cleveland Public Theatre’s Student Theatre Enrichment Program and their original piece Awakening Heart a reimagined story of Gilgamesh. The opening weekend also includes two performances of The Tempest by the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival.

The second weekend is our weekend of Dance. This year, Friday night’s performance will coincide with Walkabout Tremont Dance About Tremont, see the ad on page 5 for details. Dance kicks off Thursday night with Inlet Dance, their program includes BALListic (2004), There is a Fountain (2002), Doppelganger (2001), Soon I Will Be Done (1993), This Could Hurt (2005), War Effort Eves (2002), and Four Elements (2015) of Earh, Water, Fire and Air. GroundWorks DanceTheatre performs Friday a new works HEX (2016) and CARMINA BURANA (2016). Verb Ballets closes out the dance weekend on Saturday performing Aposiopesis (2001), Spartacus (2014), Andante Sostenuto (1988), at your feet (2016) and Secrets From Within (2016).

The third weekend we welcome back two of our favorites to kick off two weekends of music in Lincoln Park. Partnering with Tremont’s Arts Renaissance Tremont, The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra will be performing the music of John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and a little Dixieland with Artistic Director Paul Ferguson and Vocalist, Helen Welch. Cleveland Opera Theatre will be performing Saturday evening; the concert will feature operatic favorites, previews of upcoming seasons, highlights from past seasons, light opera and golden-age musical theater.

The final weekend will get you up and dancing around the gazebo in Lincoln Park. Tony Mikael Crew will open our final weekend of Arts in August playing Arabic music and the dance party with Papo Ruiz Y La Dulzura de la Salsa will close out this season of Arts in August playing merengue, salsa, and bolero, so come and dance around the gazebo or just bring a picnic to watch!

We invite you and invite you to invite your friends for free evenings of professional arts in Lincoln Park. Bring a picnic, order take-out from one of our Tuesdays in Tremont participants listed below. You definitely want to bring a chair or a blanket to sit and remember you are in a park at dusk, so you might want to bring some bug spray too!

We would like to thank the residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, Ohio Arts Council, Forest City, Third Federal Savings and Loan, Ohio Savings Bank, John and Karen Moss, LAND Studio, State Alarm, Howard Hanna - Ted Theophylactos, Medical Mutual, Stein Inc., Howard Hanna - Carolyn Bentley, Cleveland Water, the Tremont Trek Home Tour and the Tuesdays in Tremont participants: The Flying Monkey Pub, Dante, The Rowley Inn, Fat Cats, Prosperity Social Club, The South Side, Tremont Tap House, Press Wine Bar, Civilization, Crust, Lucky’s Cafe, Parallax, Grumpy’s Cafe, The Clark Bar and Ty Fun Thai Bistro.
